Nesting Season

The only reason for the sea turtle to emerge from the ocean is to nest. Sea turtle nesting season starts May 1 and ends November 30. However, according to local nonprofit Sea Turtle Trackers, approximately 50 percent of the time, female sea turtles return to the Gulf of Mexico without laying a nest. It can happen due to human interference or light disturbance. This action is known as a “false crawl” and uses up the turtle’s valuable energy. It is very important that our residents and guests stay away from nesting turtles, avoid using white lights on the beach, and alert the proper authorities when you spy a turtle or nest! Let’s all make this a successful sea turtle season in Florida. 

What Can I Do to Help?

  • Pick up litter on the beach
  • Fill in holes left by beachgoers 
  • Follow Madeira Beach’s “Leave No Trace” Ordinance 
  • Make sure your lighting is sea turtle compliant 
  • Don’t touch, feed, or interfere with sea turtles
  • Knockdown your sandcastles before you leave the beach
  • Leave your pets at home
  • If you encounter a nesting turtle or hatchlings, stay at least 20 feet away and contact the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) at 1-888-404-FWCC (3922)
